Session Title:
Bringing Compassion and Radical Acceptance into Every Conversation: Motivational Interviewing for Recovery Coaches and Advocates
Session Details:
Kindness can be brought into action every single day to help alleviate the suffering and shame in others. Acting with compassion skillfully is vital and most likely to be helpful. Join us in a life-changing conversation that looks at the client-centered, evidence-based practice of Motivational Interviewing, a style of communication rooted in compassion, collaboration, and acceptance. In this workshop, we'll introduce you to the underlying spirit and structure of Motivational Interviewing, exploring the principles of MI with practical exercises that guide participants in strengthening their empathy skills, recognizing and eliciting client change-talk, and rolling with resistance. When we practice radical compassion with others, we use active empathetic listening and strive to build a working alliance with the people we serve. In this workshop, we'll explore moving from feeling responsible for changing a person's behavior, to supporting them in their own reasons and means for behavior change. In holding a person's suffering as well as their dreams for their life with radical acceptance and empathy, we watch them transform beautifully.
Motivational Interviewing is a practice deeply rooted in acceptance. When a practitioner or Coach is practicing radical compassion and deep empathetic listening with a client, the practitioner is coming from a place of non-judgement and is open-minded to the many pathways and perspectives a client may be coming from. In utilizing MI and holding our client's needs with the utmost respect, we are not attached to the outcome or trying to fix, but are rather there to encourage and root on the person in any and all pathways they feel compelled to pursue.
